Best Small- and Medium-Sized Companies to Work For

SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) has released the 2008 list of the Best Small- and Medium-sized companies to work for in America. This list is prepared by Great Place to Work, the same folks that bring you the Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for list. The Fortune list is for companies with 1000 or more employees. The SHRM list fills the gap for companies with fewer employees.

I am a big fan of Great Place to Work. I featured several companies from their lists in Make Their Day!  Robert Levering of Great Place to Work and I share a common view on what makes for effective recognition. He wrote the foreword to Make Their Day.

In light of my summer recognition piece I did awhile back, a couple of things really stand out.  Of the best companies:

  • 64% of the best small companies allow telecommuting at least 20% of the time.
  • 56% of the best medium-sized companies allow telecommuting at least 20% of the time.
  • 80% of the best small companies allow flex scheduling at least 20% of the time.
  • 60% of the best medium-sized companies allow flex scheduling at least 20% of the time.

Maybe they are on to something?

Tell me about your company. Do you have these options? How were they implemented? Have then been successful? What have been the downside if any?

Is your company on these lists? Feel free to comment and link to more information on flexibility in time and location requirements for employees.
