    Hi Cindy,

I am in the process of reading the “Make Their Day” book, and am already finding it very interesting and helpful. As Chairperson to our company’s Steering Committee, I have been trying to promote employee recognition to help improve morale at our Washington plant. There have been numerous complaints from employees that our managers fail to recognize them, and it’s been an ongoing struggle to bring about change. Our company used to subscribe to the Deming principle, which did not endorse employee recognition. Many of our current managers have been with us since Deming was being used, so the challenge is to change their way of thinking from what was drilled in to them for so many years. We are currently trying a program where the employees have the opportunity to nominate their co-workers, regardless of their level in the company, for excellence in 6 key areas: Safety, Quality, Service, Cost Reduction, Process Improvement and Teamwork. These areas are targeted for performance measurements, so we used them as our baseline. The employees have embraced the program thus far, but upper management is now wanting managers to have more involvement in the selection criteria – an idea that the employees have voiced their true discontent with. They believe that managers are the root of the problem, and that by giving them oversight of the program (instead of the Committee which includes their peers), that we are actually taking a step backwards. Any suggestions on how we can introduce change in to an environment that has resisted it for so long, including helping management learn how to recognize and acknowledge employees that are excelling in the 6 key areas?

Where can you find the calculator for the cost of a bad hire? Could not find it on ADP website. Thank you in advance for your help!
